Nomenclature's psy_cou perfume is the fragrance of primary modernity in which coumarin takes centre stage. This was the first molecule that allowed perfumers to break free from the past and explore modern abstraction. Instead of focusing on the almond-like aroma, perfumer Frank Voelkl drew on the molecule's true nature: the scent of fresh-cut hay. Cool, sparkling juniper berries, cardamom and creamy Palo Santo wood. Then flamboyant saffron sets everything ablaze, releasing burnt notes of coffee, frankincense and oudh. Like souls, perfumes are made of shadow and light.
