Our Skins Experts take you into the world of fragrances and highlight four key fragrance families: Woody, Fresh, Floral and Ambery.
What are fragrance families?
Fragrance families are categories that group perfumes based on their key fragrance notes and character. This helps in discovering new fragrances that match your preferences. Michael Edwards, a renowned perfume analyst, has developed a fragrance classification system that is used worldwide. His classification provides a clear overview of the diversity within the perfume world and makes it easier to discover new favourites.
Woody
The Woody fragrance family is characterised by warm, earthy and sometimes smoky notes coming from woody ingredients. Depending on the composition, woody notes can be creamy and soft, like sandalwood, or dry and fresh, like vetiver and cedar. Within the Woody fragrance family, we distinguish four subcategories:
- Woody: deep, warm woody notes such as sandalwood and patchouli, which create a rich and sophisticated scent.
- Mossy woody: a soft, earthy scent with a subtle freshness, often enriched with oakmoss for a green undertone.
- Dry wood: smoky and leathery nuances with a fresh, crisp edge, think vetiver and cedar.

Aromatic wood: a combination of woody and fresh, spicy notes, such as lavender and rosemary, that give a lively twist.
Fresh
Fresh fragrances feel light and bubbly, often with citrus, watery or green notes. They give an instant energy boost and create a fresh, clean feeling. Fresh perfumes are ideal for those who love lively and invigorating scents. Within this fragrance family, we distinguish several subcategories:
- Aromatic (Fougère): a spicy and fresh combination of lavender, basil and rosemary with subtle woody undertones.
- Citrus: sunny and sparkling scents, dominated by bergamot, orange and grapefruit, which have an immediate refreshing effect.
- Aquatic: inspired by the scent of ocean and fresh water, with marine and mineral accents for a clean, cooling experience.
- Green: bright, spicy and vibrant scents with notes of green leaves, freshly cut grass and herbs such as mint and sage.
- Fruity: a bridge between fresh and floral, with juicy and sweet aromas of peach, ripe pear and crisp apple.
Floral
Floral fragrances are dominated by floral notes such as rose, jasmine and tuberose. They range from light and sparkling to deep and sensual, making them timeless and elegant. Within the Floral fragrance family, we distinguish different styles:
- Fresh floral perfumes: a combination of bright, sparkling floral notes with fresh accents such as citrus or green leaves. Think of the airy scent of rose and the spicy brightness of lily.
- Soft floral perfumes: powdery and aldehydic notes that create a sophisticated, classic fragrance experience, such as iris and violets.
- Floral ambery: a sensual blend of fresh flowers like orange blossom with warm, sweet spices, creating an enveloping perfume.
Ambery
Ambery fragrances are known for their warm, sensual and spicy composition. They combine rich ingredients such as vanilla, amber and exotic resins for a deep and intriguing fragrance. Within the Ambery fragrance family, we distinguish three subcategories:
- Ambery: warm, musky notes enriched with vanilla, resin and a subtle hint of cinnamon, creating an enveloping scent.
- Soft ambery: a lighter interpretation with floral and aniseed notes that add an elegant softness.
- Woody ambery: a rich combination of earthy sweetness with the deep notes of sandalwood and patchouli, creating an intense character.
